“If one had but a single glance to give the world, one should gaze on Istanbul.”
Alphonse de Lamartine
City on the Seven Hills
On this web site, you’ll find occasionally lots of pictures taken in Istanbul and I’d like to take this opportunity to say a few words on this city that is of big importance to me.
I’m aware that Istanbul doesn’t need an introduction because it’s a 1700-year-old city we are talking about and I’m sure there is no need to say that it has been under the rule of three empires; Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman. What a blissful heritage for humanity to discover!
This old city has gone through so many name changes over the years and has also been nicknamed many times. However, I believe the most used nickname is “City on the Seven Hills.” This comes from the fact that Istanbul is founded on seven hills and all seven hills are located in the area that called the “Historical Peninsula.” These hills are now surmounted by monumental buildings that enrich the touristic value of the city. For those who want to pay a visit, that’s the exact spot to start.
The largest of Turkey, this city extends into both Europe and Asia; and it’s one of the few cross-continental cities in the world. You have to take the chance to set foot on both continents within the same city by keeping in mind that the Bosphorus Strait running through it is one amazing view you’ll never forget.
And of course, you should not leave Istanbul without seeing some of its interesting districts such as Sultanahmet, Galata, Pera, Ortaköy, Taksim, Eminönü, and Balat. Princess Islands will be waiting for you as well!
